Derek Brockbank served as SSC National Director in the winter and spring of 2005.
In 2003, Derek graduated from the University of Chicago and went
to work for Green Corps, the
field school for environmental organizing. His first campaign with Green Corps was in Philadelphia for the Sierra Club's “Building Environmental
Communities (BEC)” campaign. Derek and other Philadelphia
BEC organizers recruited hundreds of volunteers who helped contribute
to the massive voter mobilization in and around Philly for Election
Day 2004. With Green Corps, he also worked in Michigan for the Alaska Coaltion and directed the Sierra Club's canvass office in
Tallahassee, Florida. After graduating from Green Corps, Derek held the position
of Campus Organizer at the Union of Concerned Scientists. He then took on the role of SSC National Director in Winter 2005.
Outside of his environmental pursuits, Derek enjoys theater and the
arts. He was active in the UChicago theater community during college,
and now is a regular theater attendee. He's also a sports fan and
avid reader. Derek is originally from New York City and loves urban
culture just as much as wilderness tranquility.
