Join us at the first ever, Northwest Climate Justice Summit, hosted by the Sierra Student Coalition with the support of the Energy Action Coalition.
During the past several years, the youth climate movement has been sweeping campuses across the country. It's time to bring it to the Northwest in full force. To fight global warming, we need to act TOGETHER and NOW.

Join us to...
• Get Skillz. Experienced SSC student organizers will run workshops on starting student organizations, working with the media, strategic campaign planning to set yourself up for a win, green policies you can push for, and much more!
• Connect with allies. Help build a strong, active, and successful network of student climate activists in the Northwest.
• Get inspired. Witness the human side in the fight against global warming- listen to Faith Gemmill from Alaska speak about how climate change and dirty energy production has effected her native community.
• Share experiences. See how other students in the Northwest have responded to the challenge- learning from each other's work to bring clean energy, efficiency, and renewables to campus.
• Make friends. Eat delicious food and have a grand time with cool, new, like-minded students from across the region.
• Learn the Issues. Activists from across the region will speak about dirty energy issues in the Northwest and how students can take action locally- including fossil fuel activism in Oregon and along the Columbia River.
• Hear the Rumble of a Movement. Listen to awesome speakers in the Climate Movement, including leaders of the Energy Action Coalition and Seattle's own Mayor Greg Nickels- creator of the Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement.
The Details
Costs: Summit organizers are asking for a modest fee per participant to help pay for food, lodging, and supplies. Sliding scale donations are possible, contact Juliana (williajm [at] whitman.edu) for questions.
$10 for individual participant
$30 for each group of 4 participants (who plan to organize together)
Please bring cash, check, or money order made out to "Sierra Student Coalition" upon check-in of the event (which is Friday, Feb. 4 by 6pm).
Lodging: We will be staying on floors in a community center around the University of Washington in Seattle. Participants will have access to bathrooms but shower access is limited. Please let Summit organizers know of your special needs BEFORE you arrive on site. Be sure to check the Packing List and don't forget a sleeping pad! Contact Christina (crajan [at] washington.edu) for housing details or concerns by January 15th so that we can accommodate you.
Food: We will be serving catered vegetarian and vegan meals on Saturday and Sunday. Friday night participants are free to go out to explore "the Ave" in Seattle and eat wherever and whatever strikes their fancy, but must be back to the site by session start time (7pm). Snacks will be available between certain sessions and trainings.
Merch: We will be selling t-shirts, stickers, and other cool Energy Action/Sierra Student Coalition merchandise at the Summit. You might want to bring some extra dough in case you want to bring back some climate activist Bling for yourself or your members.
Parking: We recommend you park in Lot C1 (Central Plaza Parking Garage) who's frontgate entry is just off 15th Ave. NE and 41st near the Henry Art Gallery in UW. (map here) If you arrive before 4pm on Friday and need to park, you'll have to pay $16 for the whole weekend. If you arrive after 4pm, you'll only have to pay $10 for the whole weekend. So we recommend you come and drop your stuff off in The Lutheran Center on The Ave (if you arrive before 4pm)and then go explore Seattle a bit before you commit to parking. (We can provide maps to Gasworks Park, which a beautiful park that overlooks downtown Seattle and the water.) Be sure to ask for the "Daily Double" permit and mention the Northwest Climate Justice Summit to the attendant.
Locations: Conference trainings and sessions will occur at The Lutheran Center (at 4130 University Way, Seattle, 98105) and the Ethnic Cultural Center just south of UW main campus (on Brooklyn and 40th NE in the University District (aka U-District): http://depts.washington.edu/ecc/aboutus.htm). Participants will stay at The Lutheran Center on the floor of a carpeted community room, so be sure to bring a sleeping pad and blanket!
Lockers: If you want to secure your valuables in a locker, bring a pad lock and let us know at registration. There are very few lockers available, so this is on a first-come, first-served basis (unless you specifically reserve one. contact Christina NOW to do so.)

- Clothes (for cold –and maybe wet- weather! Jackets/sweaters, gloves, hats, scarves)

- Flashlight (with batteries)
- Towel
- Camera – to record the good times
- Activist friends (people committed to fight global warming with you)

EVERY MEMBER OF YOUR GROUP WHO'S ATTENDING MUST REGISTER INDIVIDUALLY!
Groups made up of lots of schools are welcomed and encouraged.
Check in window is open from 3-6pm. Drop your stuff off and explore Seattle until we start at 7pm on Friday.
Showers are not provided on site; there's your warning!
This is going to be awesome...
Advisor/Faculty trainings available! For school administration, faculty, or advisors who want to work with students to fight global warming on campus, faculty training will last on Saturday from 10am to 12 noon at UW, followed by lunch. If any adult faculty would like to attend this training and help spur student climate activism at their school, please register as soon as possible and be sure to make a note on the form that you'll be attending the "Advisor/Faculty training" and please indicate whether you'll need a lunch. There may be a nominal registration fee gathered on-site just to pay for lunch, register soon and we'll let you know.
To build a movement, we're strongly encouraging everyone to stay together on site at the Lutheran Center for housing this weekend, even if you live in Seattle. And, you wouldn't want to leave, because we have great evening activities planned...including but not limited to: dance parties, showing of An Inconvenient Truth, open mic, late-night games/sports (frisbee? soccer? capture the flag?) in Ravenna Park- yeah it'll be sweet. Don't go home!
On Friday night check in (between 3 and 6:30pm, Feb. 2nd), be sure to be at The Lutheran Center (fed and settled in) promptly by 7pm. Dinner on Friday night is NOT SCHEDULED by the Summit organizers- you're on your own, but we can recommend some delicious places to eat on The Ave surrounding the site. At exactly 7pm we will start Introductions and our keynote speeches- don't be late!
Students must attend all sessions. We've designed the Summit so that it's as perfect as it should be: fun, informative, cozy, and inspiring. We've hand-picked the best SSC trainers and energy activism speakers to come out for this weekend, and we need every student at every session to make this conference worthwhile for everyone.
Once you register, you will be contacted and sent specific agenda and information on where to be, when to be there, as well as a couple easy documents to fill out (depending on if you apply for travel scholarships, need carpool information, are a minor and need a liability form filled out, or other such things.) Also, you will have a choice on what type of Media training to recieve (Intro to "Framing the Debate and Messaging," "Media: How to Deal," or "Advanced Media." Register and these titles will be explained so you can pick your training- again, spaces limited! So REGISTER NOW and get that paperwork out of the way!
