Campus Climate Challenge
Climate Neutrality Summit

hosted by MiddShift & the Sierra Student Coalition
Middlebury College, Jan 19-21
Middlebury Vermont

Introduction:
The past year has seen an incredible movement on campuses around the US and Canada to become climate neutral. Schools such as College of the Atlantic, Oberlin College, the University of Florida, and others have committed to the goal of carbon neutrality. Others, including Middlebury and the University of California - Santa Barbara, have been developing plans to achieve climate neutrality. The American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment is getting dozens of college Presidents on board with this goal. Climate neutrality means taking responsibility for all our carbon emissions, and taking a moral stand that we need to END our contribution to global warming.

The Climate Neutrality Summit will be an opportunity to share strategies, plans and ideas, unify efforts, and discuss how climate neutrality victories on campuses can create demand for climate protection policies in broader society, all in a beautiful setting.

It’ll also be an opportunity to wrap up your Winter Break with a weekend of fun with awesome like-minded people, get ready for a kickin’ Spring semester, enjoy the Vermont winter (while it lasts!) and go skiing at Middlebury’s climate-neutral ski slope!

Description:
The summit will take place Jan 19-21 (Friday morning to Sunday afternoon) at Middlebury College, in Middlebury, VT, just south of Burlington. It will be hosted by MiddShift, Middlebury’s student climate neutrality campaign. Unlike most conferences, the summit will be in a retreat-type format and will be primarily open-source. After an opening key-note speaker (and a party), the majority of the time will be left open for schools and participants to discuss common obstacles, to share ideas, craft plans, and learn details about how other students are pushing the idea of climate neutrality on their campuses. By registering for the summit, you’ll have the opportunity to help craft the agenda so that we address the topics most helpful to you, whether you are running a climate neutral campaign or hope to start one.

MiddShift activists who will be spending their January term working intensively on Middlebury’s plan for carbon neutrality will be able to share details of how they will achieve their goals. The summit will be free and lodging and food will be provided by MiddShift. We hope to make travel scholarships available to anyone for whom travel costs would prevent attendance.

Goals:

  • Disseminate and discuss a “Climate Neutrality Toolkit” created by MiddShift in partnership with the Sierra Student Coalition.
  • Share strategies, plans, and tactics on achieving climate neutrality.
  • Discuss how best to talk about climate neutrality - and climate positivity! - with students, staff, and administrators.
  • Agree on a coordinated climate neutrality goal and campaign for NESCAC member schools (North Eastern Small College Athletic Association), modeled on Ivy League student collaborations.
  • Discuss the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (ASHE) “American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment” and coordinate efforts to get Presidents’ commitments.
  • Create a mechanism for continuing to work together on climate neutrality
  • Discuss how to best promote climate neutrality as a goal for colleges and universities already involved in the Campus Climate Challenge.
  • Discuss the possibility of a climate neutral symbol or logo for universities and colleges
  • Have an awesome weekend in beautiful Vermont!
